Women's Basketball Defeats Five Towns College, 58-34

DIX HILLS, N.Y. - December 1, 2018 - Led by 18 points and 14 rebounds from junior forward Emily Guerra (Babylon, N.Y.), the Pratt Institute women's basketball team picked up a 54-34 win over Five Towns College on Saturday afternoon in Dix Hills.

The Cannoneers now hold a record of 3-2 on the year, while the Sound fell to 3-2 overall. Pratt Institute were dominant on the defensive end, holding Five Towns to just 15-71 (21.1%) from the field, and forcing them into 23 turnovers in the win. The Cannoneers shot 25-of-83 (30.1%) from the floor over 40 minutes of play. Additionally, Pratt held the Blue to shooting just 2-17 (11.8%) from three while the Cannoneers shot 6-29 (20.7%) from deep and assisted on 19 of their 25 baskets on the day.

Leading the charge offensively was Idalia Kaplan (Seattle, Wash.) and Amissa Epperson (Jersey City, N.J.) as they each registered near triple-doubles in the victory. Kaplan finished with 16 points, 11 rebounds, and a season-high seven assists, while Epperson was a stat-sheet stuffer as she recorded 12 points, a season-high 18 rebounds and a season-high eight blocks, while handing out five assists, to go along with five steals.

The Sound was led by Jada Roberts Duncan, who scored 18 points, and grabbed eight rebounds, while Chloe Walton dished six assists. Denisha Allen snagged 16 boards as well.

Five Towns jumped out to a 6-0 lead, before Pratt's Guerra scored in the paint with 5:56 left in the first quarter to open up the scoring for the Cannoneers. Following a timeout by the hosts with 2:35 remaining in the opening period, Guerra would drill a three-pointer, and Kaplan would make a jumper to give Pratt the lead, 9-8, with 1:20 to go in the first.

Kinako Miyake (San Mateo, C.A.) would splash back-to-back threes in the opening 60 seconds of the second quarter to push the Cannoneers' lead to 15-8. With 5:03 to play in the first half, Anna Seminara (Lancaster, P.A.) made a jump shot, and Kaplan added to the lead with another jumper, 21-15, forcing the Sound to call another timeout with 2:16 left in the second quarter. A layup by the Sound's Roberts cut the lead to four before Kaplan knocked down two three-pointers in a 35 second stretch that would stretch the lead back to 27-19 with 46 seconds on the clock, a score that would remain until the halftime break.

Opening the second half, the Cannoneers extended their lead, as Guerra scored nine points in the first 1:21 to make it 34-19, before Five Towns called timeout. The Sound responded with their own 6-0 run, to make the score, 34-25, forcing head coach Wilfredo Rivera to call his own timeout with 5:42 to play in the third quarter. The Cannoneers would score eight more points in the period, including four from Epperson, to head into the fourth quarter with a 42-31 lead.

Entering the final stanza with a 12-point lead, Pratt's defense clamped down to hold the Sound to 1-21 (4.8%) shooting in the game's final 10 minutes, including 0-8 from behind the arc. Guerra would score six points in the final frame, and Epperson would add two more blocks, along with four points and five rebounds, as the Cannoneers' lead ballooned to 24 on Guerra's free throws with 23 seconds remaining, for the final score, 58-34.
