BROOKLYN – The Pratt Cannoneers lost both ends of their home tri-match on Saturday afternoon at the ARC. With the results, Pratt's record drops to 2-5 overall.
For the two matches, outside hitter Dean Liaw led the Pratt attacked, collected 33 kills and 17 digs, while fellow sophomore Albi Marke tallied 15 kills, 17 digs, and five aces. Ye Hu Hwang notched 24 digs over the two games, and Kristopher Patton dished out 46 assists.
Match 1 | Pratt 1, Cooper Union 3: Despite a season-high 25 kills from Liaw, Pratt dropped their opening match, a 3-1 (25-15, 24-26, 22-25, 24-26) decision to the Hawks of Cooper Union.
In the opening set, a pair of Albi Marke aces helped the Cannoneers race out to a 7-1 lead. After a Hawk's rally made the score 10-9 in favor of Pratt, consecutive kills by Liaw and Marke highlighted a 9-2 run that gave Louis Sepulveda's squad a 7-point cushion. Pratt would distance themselves from the Hawks from there, taking the first set 25-15.
Set two remained highly-competitive until the Hawks capitalized on several Pratt mistakes to take an 18-10 advantage. Behind three-straight Marke aces, the Cannoneers tie the score at 18-18 and force a Cooper Union timeout. Tied at 24-24, a pair of hitting errors from Pratt gave the Hawks the second set, 26-24.
After dropping the third set, 25-22, Pratt led the fourth set 13-11 after Graham Rose's ace and another Marke kill. Cooper Union would regroup, and behind the hitting of outside hitter Mishal Luczkiw, lead the set 24-21. Kills by Marke and Liaw would tie the score at 24 apiece, however, Cooper would score the final two points and take the match 3-1.
Match 2 | Pratt 0, Mount Ida College 3: After an emotionally-exhausting four-set defeat earlier in the day, the Cannoneers would struggle on the attack, falling to the Mount Ida Mustangs 3-0 (25-8, 25-14, 25-10) in the finale of the tri-match.
For the match, Pratt would commit 15 attacking errors, while hitting -.051 overall. By comparison, the Mustangs limited their mistakes, hitting .258 for the match with 25 kills and just nine errors.
Liaw's eight kills paces Pratt, and Patton added 11 assists.
The Mustangs were led by Brett Southworth's eight kill, 11 ace performance.
