NEWTON, MA – Pratt Institute fell 3-2 to Lesley University and 3-1 to the host Mustangs at Mount Ida College's tri-match Saturday afternoon in non-conference men's volleyball play.
In the setback to Lesley, David Cutler led Pratt with 15 kills on 60 attempts, but with 17 attack errors to go along with 16 digs and four block assists. Matthew Valentine added eight kills and eight digs, while Connan Moody threw down eight kills to go along with a solo block and two block assists.
The Cannoneers came within three points of a 3-0 sweep, forcing a Lynx timeout leading 22-21 in Game 3 with a 2-0 match lead. Lesley's Tyler Burns came out of the timeout with a pair of kills, and with the Lynx now at match point, Cutler was blocked at the net in preventing a Cannoneers sweep.
After Lesley earned a 25-17 Game 4 win, Pratt forced a Lesley timeout after a pair of Brandon Ryan aces put the Cannoneers in front 5-3, with a pair of Lynx attack errors lifting Pratt on top 7-3. Four Cannoneers combined for five attack errors in a 7-1 Lesley run that suddenly found the Lynx on top 10-7. Cutler and Matthew Valentine converted kills that tied the set at 10-10, but with the game tied 12-12, two more Pratt attack errors and a Jess Cherry ace completed the Lynx comeback with a 3-2 deciding set win.
Against Mount Ida, the Mustangs faced game point in the opening set when two Cutler kills and a Mount Ida attack error gave Pratt a hard-fought 28-26 victory. From there, the Cannoneers hit -.074 and -.071 as a team in dropping the second and third sets, and the Mustangs hit a scorching .292 in a 25-15 Game 4 win.
Cutler led all players with 19 kills and 20 digs in the loss, with Valentine adding three block assists in the loss. As a team, Pratt hit only .018 in falling to 3-4 on the season.
The Cannoneers return to the court on Friday, playing host to Sarah Lawrence College in non-conference play.
