BROOKLYN, N.Y. - November 20, 2018 - Playing in its fourth straight home game to open the season, the Pratt Institute men's basketball team was edged by Touro College, 66-64, on Tuesday evening in the Pratt ARC.
The Cannoneers snapped its two game winning streak and fall to 2-2 on the season, while the Tornadoes picked up their second win to move to 2-3.
Senior forward Tytus Millikan (Winnemucca, Nev.) showed off his versatility, scoring a team-high 16 points on six-of-eight shooting to go along with nine boards, four assists, and two blocks. Griffin Levine (Dallas, Tex.) added 15 points, while Akil Philip (Queens, N.Y.) snagged a game-high 15 rebounds. Pratt had 16 assists on 22 made baskets, and owned a 44-39 edge on the glass, but was daunted by 17 turnovers which resulted in 12 points for the visitors.
The Tornadoes' Nelis Wise tallied a game-best 24 points and seven steals, while Daniel Abreu added 16 points. Shmuel Bitton corralled 14 rebounds and handed out four assists in the win.
Pratt opened up a 12-5 lead to begin the game after a triple from Bubby Vernon (Boulder, CO) at the 16-minute mark, only to have Touro answer back with a 13-3 run to gain a three-point cushion with 10:16 on the clock following a layup from Wise. Jason Yao (Vancouver, BC) later buried a mid-range jumper with 6:19 left to bring the Cannoneers within one, 24-23. The visitors would extend their lead to 34-27 at the four-minute mark before Pratt would end the half on a furious 12-1 run, punctuated by a layup from Hamza Hamdeh (Brooklyn, N.Y.) with just 47 seconds remaining in the first half, as the Cannoneers went into the locker room with a 39-35 edge.
Levine would nail a three pointer to extend the Pratt lead to 44-35 in the first minutes of the second half, before 13-4 run by Touro would cut the lead to 49-48, following two layups from Abreu with 15:14 remaining in the game. Pratt would hold a 59-50 lead following a Vernon triple with 7:53 to go, only to see the Tornadoes go on 12-0 run to retake the lead, 62-59, at the 3:29 mark.
Millikan would split a double-team to finish in the paint to cut the Touro lead to 62-51, and then following back-to-back stops by the Cannoneers defense, the senior forward would splash a three-pointer off an assist from Levine with ninety seconds remaining to give Pratt their final lead of the game, 64-62.
The Touros responded with a layup by Wise with 1:17 to go to tie the score, and then after empty possessions from both teams, Abreu stole the ball from Pratt and raced the length of the court, and drilled a jumper with 1.2 seconds left for the game-winner.
